  • Living Room Design Mistakes to Avoid
Designing your living room comes with tons of possibilities. However, with that comes the potential for mistakes as well. When putting together your layout, there are a few common problems you’ll want to steer clear of. Here are some of the mistakes people make most often and how to avoid them.

    Letting the TV Take Over

In today’s tech-centric world, the TV often becomes the center of the living room. However, this isn’t necessarily a good thing from either a functional standpoint or a design standpoint. After all, your living room should be for living, and that includes more than just falling asleep in front of your favorite Netflix series. To prevent this problem from happening in your space, try aligning your couches and chairs to create a social atmosphere. This is very easy to do by putting them in an L or U shape, and encourages people in the room to talk to each other instead of just focusing on the TV. Installing a small TV instead of a huge flat-screen model can also diminish the device’s importance.

    Cramped Walkways

Living rooms are often a throughway to other spaces in the house, so it’s important for you to be able to walk in and out of them easily. If the pathways in your living room are too cramped, this will be very frustrating for both you and your guests. To prevent this from happening, be sure to keep furniture away from the entrances, and make sure that anyone sitting at any couch or chair can get out without having to do a lap first. For more tips on remodeling your home in ST louis, you also may want to get rid of some furniture if the space still feels cluttered. Sometimes less is more when it comes to design.

    Dull Color Palette

Yes, minimalism and Scandinavian decor are in right now, but that doesn’t mean you can get away with no color in your space. If your space is only composed of whites, beiges, and greys, it can look lifeless or even dingy. Pick a color or two that you like and incorporate it into the space using accessories, like pillows and vases. This will give the room some energy, but you won’t feel like you’re drowning in color either.

    Not Enough Light

Living rooms should be comfortable and welcoming, but they probably won’t feel that way if they’re too dim. It’s important to draw from several different sources of light, so that the end result is a warm glow instead of a harsh glare. If you have overhead lighting, balance it out with some stylish floor or table lamps throughout the room. You’ll also want to take advantage of the windows you have in your living space to bring natural light in. If you don’t have windows in your living room, talk to your interior designer about adding some!

    Strange Proportions

If furniture pieces are too big or too small, they can make the space feel uncomfortable. This is particularly true for couches, coffee tables, and rugs. Before you go shopping, do some measuring to determine exactly what size of furniture will work well in your space. You’ll also want to make sure that the furniture is properly proportioned to each other – if you have a tiny coffee table next to a gargantuan couch, then it’s going to feel “off”, no matter how stylish the pieces are on their own.

    Uncomfortable Furniture

The living room is supposed to be a place to relax, but it will be difficult for your guests to do that if your furniture is too angular or hard. Although geometric couches and chairs may look stylish, they aren’t always comfortable, so focus on a balance of coziness and style when you’re designing the space. In the long run, you’ll get much more use out of a couch you actually like sitting on.

    Misplaced Art

Your art should be a focal point of your space, but if it’s too high or too low, people won’t look at it. Keep your art at about eye level so people aren’t craning their necks to look at it. This also goes for the TV if you are planning on installing one in your living room.
