RE: Stonehenge Visitor Centre approved
CBA is delighted with the Secretary of State's recent decision on 29th March 2007 to grant English Heritage planning permission for the new Visitor Facilities and Access Scheme at Stonehenge.

As the project's Planning Advisor, lead Environmental Assessor and Landscape Architect, CBA were instrumental in both the preparation of the planning application and in securing planning consent on behalf of English Heritage.

The Secretary of State concluded that the proposals would enhance the setting of Stonehenge and the World Heritage Site. Key benefits of the scheme cited by the decision letter included promoting wider access to the World Heritage Site, providing information that would allow Stonehenge to be better appreciated in its physical and historical context, and allowing removal of the existing visitor facility and restoration of the landscape.

CBA Director Dominic Watkins said, "English Heritage has been trying to find a solution for enhancing the presentation and interpretation of Stonehenge for over 20 years. The Secretary of State's decision to grant planning consent for the new visitor facilities and access arrangements is a major step forwards. We welcome this decision as it reflects the strong case made by the planning application, which was found to be robust by the Inspector when tested at appeal."
